I recently finished a squad of Vanguard Veterans to go with the Shadow Captain I completed a few months ago. Like him they are customized a good bit because I wanted a fairly specific look to them.
I ended up cobbling them together from the Vanguard kit, plus beaky heads from any other kit I could find to include Dark and Blood Angels. Most of the chests are from Forge World, and two of them use the bodies and lightening claws from the Dark Fury Assault Squad with Vanguard jump packs and different heads. One of which came from Anvil Industries like my Shadow Captain.
Color wise I went basic, satin black basecoat and then silver, gun metal, and white with sephia and nuln oil washes to pick out all of the details. Then Guilliman Blue glaze to highlight the power weapons. Like the Shadow Captain I left off any hard highlights, and instead used a dullcoat and then light gloss on the edges. While it photographs a little flat, I really prefer the way it looks in person.
For basing I used the new Games Workshop 32mm Bases. While I’ve seen reviews from people disappointed with the amount of details on them, I really like them. A basecoat, followed by dry brushing and washes made them look great with minimal effort. Gave a nice industrial look to them.
And I leave you with a final look of them with their Shadow Captain. Eventually, they’ll have a squad of Sternguard to go with them.
